In his second year in Detroit following his departure from the Los Angeles Rams, Jared Goff has helped put the Lions in a position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Detroit is 8-8, having won 7 of their last 9 games to being just a win versus the Packers and a Seattle loss from reaching postseason play. Jared Goff has found comfort within Detroit's system and is putting up arguably the best numbers of his NFL career – posting 4,214 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions on the year, and doing an excellent job spreading the ball around to a host of pass catchers. His clear comfort within the system and confidence as a leader this season are welcomed sights for the Lions. The only downside of his performance is it that it is sure to make Detroit's future decisions at quarterback that much more difficult.
The next major factor to the Lions' surge is the offense itself, which has taken many by surprise with how explosive it is. Now outside of 2nd-year stud receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and running back Deandre Swift, there are few household names on this unit that are lighting up the league. Yet head coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson have created an offense that is 5th in points per game, while also being 8th in pass yards per game and 11th in rush yards per game. The one-year turnaround their offense has seen is incredible and the fact they have done this without their first-round pick Jameson Williams for most of the season is commendable. Now we will see if this unit can overwhelm a surging Packers defense and get themselves into the postseason.
